Chemical Weapons Destruction

The GP Difference in Chemical Weapons Destruction

In a hazardous environment, safety is paramount. GP's extensive chemical agent demilitarization experience, coupled with our core competency in training, ensures the thorough, process-driven safety, emergency preparedness, and technical training needed to complete your mission, and preserve and protect the well-being of your operators, managers, and personnel. GP has the expertise, personnel, and partnerships to support you in everything from technical roles to facility operations, throughout every phase of your organization's life cycle.

GP has supported the destruction of chemical weapons since 1985. Our experience began as a major subcontractor on the BZ Destruction Program. GP was selected as the prime contractor for the Chemical Demilitarization Training Facility (CDTF) in 1989 and continues to operate the CDTF today. In 1996, GP was selected as a major subcontractor to support the startup and operation of the Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility. In 1998, GP was selected as a major subcontractor to support operation at the Aberdeen Chemical Agent Disposal Facility. Since 2003, GP has won several other subcontracts to support the operation of the chemical agent disposal facilities located at Pine Bluff, Arkansas; Umatilla, Oregon; Tooele, Utah; Blue Grass, Kentucky; and Pueblo, Colorado.

Emergency Response Experience

As the prime contractor for the CDTF, GP supported the development of the Emergency Preparedness Management and Response Program for the Chemical Materials Agency (CMA). This program included the following:

  • Developing CMA policy for facility emergency response exercise programs
  • Developing CMA's Guide to Emergency Response Exercises
  • Providing input for the development of the Guide to Emergency Response Planning
  • Developing program-wide standardized emergency response training
  • Evaluating site emergency response exercises

GP also developed and managed the Emergency Preparedness Program for the prime contractor at the Aberdeen Chemical Agent Disposal Facility. Key elements of the program include the following:

  • Developing the emergency response plan
  • Developing emergency response procedures
  • Conducting emergency response training
  • Conducting drills and exercises
  • Evaluating and improving the effectiveness of the emergency response program

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Training Experience

As a part of the overall training and exercise program at the CDTF, GP conducts first responder training in a simulated chemical environment. Over a six-day period, students participate in a series of live drills that are designed to allow them to practice their skills in donning and doffing PPE, controlling chemical agent contamination, rescuing a chemical agent casualty, and conducting decontamination operations. GP has conducted hundred of classes and trained thousands of students since the start of training operations in 1991.

Chemical Agent Monitoring and Analytical Experience

GP was responsible for the startup, operation, and management of the chemical agent laboratory for the prime contractor on the BZ Destruction Project. Key elements provided to the client included the following:

  • Developing monitoring, analytical, and quality plans
  • Developing standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Developing monitoring and analytical methods
  • Conducting precision and accuracy studies
  • Selecting, hiring, and training laboratory personnel
  • Collecting and analyzing samples in various matrixes
  • Maintaining records

As part of the overall training and exercise program at the CDTF, GP has conducted hundreds of classes for thousands of laboratory students on the operation and maintenance of chemical agent monitoring and analytical equipment. Major equipment includes the following:

  • Depot Area Air-Monitoring System (DAAMS)
  • Automatic Continuous Air-Monitoring System (ACAMS)
  • Miniature chemical air-monitoring system
  • Gas chromatographs
  • Mass spectrometers
