Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment (START) Training
The GP Difference in START Training
GP provides START training and exercises that are designed to help your organization understand mass casualty incidents and manage and prioritize high numbers of victims. Unique to GP are the challenging practical exercises conducted at the end of the training session. The exercises reinforce skills learned during the training session.
A mass casualty incident can significantly overwhelm medical resources and facilities, compromising victim care. GP has developed a training and exercise program that encompasses Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment (START) for adults and children. The START technique, developed by the Newport Beach Fire Department, is the accepted standard followed by firefighters and emergency medical system personnel to manage mass casualty incidents.
This course will help jurisdictions meet the following capability-specific priority outlined in the Department of Homeland Security's National Preparedness Goal: Strengthen Medical Surge and Mass Prophylaxis Capabilities. In short, START training prepares first responders and receivers to better manage resources during a catastrophic event.
Our Unique Approach to START Training
GP's START training and exercise course prepares first responders and receivers by teaching the skills needed to aid in victim identification and triage. START-trained responders are able to ease the pressures on licensed medical personnel by helping with triage efforts, extending the capabilities of available resources and enabling better service in mass casualty situations.
GP's START training course also helps students handle the ethical and emotional impacts of triage and rapid treatment, enabling them to respond with more confidence in an emergency.
Our Experience in START Training
GP is highly experienced in emergency medical practices and uses only the most current techniques when developing and providing START training and exercise programs. Each training and exercise package is customized to meet the needs of your jurisdiction. GP project experience includes the following:
- Developed a START-based training program customized for Little Rock, Arkansas, Metropolitan Region Bioterrorism Hospital Group
- Provided triage training to the Northern Westchester County, New York, Hospital Center
About START
START was developed and copyrighted by the Newport Beach Fire Department, Newport Beach, California. The information provided in this course is intended to assist in decision making during an emergency situation; however, nothing in this course is intended to provide medical advice for any specific situation, and the START protocols should always be taught and performed under the supervision of trained medical personnel. Personnel trained in this START training program are not intended to replace licensed emergency medical personnel, but to supplement those resources during a mass casualty incident. No certification or license is provided for taking this course.
