"The 2003 Training Top 100"

This article provides some excellent data for companies wishing to benchmark their training efforts against what Training magazine considers to be the top training departments in U.S. companies:

  1. The average "Top 100" company spends 4.6% of its payroll on training. The average of the Top 5 companies is 11% (Pfizer leads with 15%);
  2. The average "Top 100" company has 65 annual training hours per employee. The average of the Top 5 companies is 232 hours (Orkin leads with 284 hours);
  3. The average "Top 100" company has a ratio of full-time training pros to employees of 1:336. The average Top 10 ratio is 1:51 (SCC SoftComputer leads with 1:30);
  4. The average "Top 100" company spends $4.1 million annually on tuition. The average Top 10 company spends $17.8 million (Verizon communications leads at $66 million);
  5. The average "Top 100" company has 8% of its employees using tuition reimbursement plans; The average Top 10 company has 27% (Naval Undersea leads at 66%);
  6. Out of the "Top 100" companies, here are the percentages which have the following training programs: Leadership Development—99% (FedEx is the benchmark company); First-Line Supervisor Development—93% (IBM is the benchmark company); Mentoring—85% (KLA-Tencor Corp. is the benchmark company); Career Counseling—82% (Federated Department Stores is the benchmark company); Executive Coaching—82% (Equity Residential is the benchmark company); Succession Planning—79% (Delta Air Lines is the benchmark company); Job Rotation—63% (Arrow Electronics is the benchmark company); Job Shadowing—61% (CrossCountry Travcorps is the benchmark company).

The overall ranking of the top 50 on the list is: (1) Pfizer, (2) IBM, (3) Sprint, (4) AmeriCredit, (5) KLA-Tencor, (6) Booz Allen Hamilton, (7) Ernst & Young, (8) Deloitte & Touche, (9) Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co., (10) AT&T Business Services, (11) Lockheed Martin, (12) Edward Jones, (13) USAA, (14) LexisNexis, (15) Bank One, (16) Ohio Savings Bank, (17) Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, (18) Ingram Micro, (19) Northwest Airlines, (20) Intel, (21) Delta Air Lines, (22) FedEx, (23) Accenture, (24) American Skandia, (25) Capital, One Financial Corp., (26) Verizon Wireless, (27) Systemax Inc., (28) Marriott International, (29) BMO Financial Group, (30) AFLAC, (31) Qwest Communications, (32) Exelon Energy Delivery Co., (33) Paychex Inc., (34) Bowater Coated and Specialty Papers Division, (35) Federated Department Stores, (36) J.D.
