Case Study - IT Staff and User Training

National Power made the decision that the existing hardware and software used within the company was to be replaced by a millennium-compliant infrastructure which would be more cost effective and of business benefit.

The existing e-mail application was a DOS based system and a mixture of software applications was in use throughout the company. The new infrastructure included Microsoft Office 97 and Outlook mail. The daily use of these systems would be very different from the former software.

GP's brief was to advise and create a training programme, which would give users the business basics within the new applications on a 1-day course. The training programme was to take place over a 6-month period and ensure that all 3,500 users in 20 sites would receive the basics of using the new infrastructure and any other business critical software training.

GP services included:

  • Deliver 1-day training course covering basics of new packages.
  • Deliver 1-day training of core competencies to all sites outside of pilot within a 4-month window.
  • Train support staff in Office 97 to support level.
  • Develop project and site plans for training and assist in the development of project plans for hardware installation.
  • Prepare and deliver train-the-trainer presentation for all NP trainers to ensure total immersion of NP procedures and information.
  • Develop outlines, trainer guidelines and exercises for all courses delivered, for users who have various IT skills and job roles, from director level to truck drivers.
  • Develop course manuals that are to reside on the company intranet.
  • Develop quick reference guides to handout to all delegates.
